Lachrymose - Carpe Noctum album cover

LACHRYMOSE is just one of those cases where you could say that the band has potential, but they just do not know how to bring it on. "Carpe noctum" is an album that shows just that. The intro is just some echo-based weakness. Come on, that could have been better. The first song "False God", which they released as a pre-release single is quite weak. Just like the rest of the album

The power shown in "Pinnacle of Faith" is nice, but yet, the weak sound of the guitar and bass make the song less than it is. The overall vocals could be used better. Hel has a nice sound in her throat, yet the album has the power to make it sound awkward, sometimes atonal.

The misery of this production is that it could have been. The writing is quite good, the concept is right and the skill is visibly there. Maybe except for the awkward growls by Blackmass I guess, those just need general improvement in my opinion. The end product is just not what it could have been, would LACHRYMOSE just put some more time (effort is one plus) into this hard, unchiseled semi-gem.

The proof for all of this can be found in the third last song, "In A Reverie" with guest singer Thomas Vikstroem. The song has power, good writing, Thomas sounds good, Hel sounds good, but the awkward way of the way the vocals have been used and the weak power of the guitar in this piece where it could have been so much more, make this one hell of a missed chance. Except for the intro of this song, which was okay, I guess.

Reviewing this album really made me feel down. I hate having to be hard on this form of obvious talent, but there is definite need of refurbishing the mix, and making these guitars come out better is just of the small things that could potentially improve this album from an evil 5 to a potential 8.
