Labyrinthine Heirs
Labyrinthine Heirs

From Bandcamp, “Faithful to the motto "unique and uncompromising music from the Metal Underground, I, Voidhanger Records is pleased to present the debut album of LABYRINTHINE HEIRS, an astonishing Texan quartet that demonstrates, if proof were still needed, the ductility and expressive possibilities of the metal genre. All members of the band come from different metal tribes in Austin, and therefore our music is not easily categorized, explains singer Evan Sadler, but from the beginning the plan was to marry the sound of Touch and Go Records artists like THE JESUS LIZARD and SHELLAC with that of CELTIC FROST and VIRUS. I have always been attracted to black metal because of its heretical nature towards our vapid concepts of the divine, and the idea that if you sit in the darkness long enough, you are able to see what has always been in front of us."
The album has five songs, and “Brick Refusers Quartered” is first. It is relatively smooth at first, with a steady riff that has some jagged edges, and harsh vocals. It gets more dense as it moves forward but remains fairly even-keeled. “The Loop of Human Flesh Told in Perpetuity” moves a little faster and has some meaty bass notes. The smooth delivery of the riff and vocals reminds me of a band like GOJIRA, without some of their weight. They lay on that riff and don’t stray too far from the path and build a good deal of tension in the music also. “The Conceited Determination of Nimrod” is another song with heavy dissonance. Bass notes carry the early structure followed by short, staccato riffs. This is an uncommon song, but to be honest, I was expecting some more experimentation or veers off the path.
“Satan’s Domain is the Liver” sounds very similar to some of the other songs, and at this point, I feel that the band isn’t pushing themselves. They found a fairly unique sound, and they stay with it. “Yaldabaoth Gored to Blindness” has another fairly simple riff with even keeled vocals, and although the meter is shifted, the song gives straightforward vibes to me. The music isn’t as hard to categorize as one might think. It has a haunting quality, combined with a hypnotic sound, and the songs blend together. This gives the album cohesion, but not diversity. The album has promise, but being uncommon isn’t much of a unique feature in today’s world of Metal.
