When A Star Falls

From their EPK, "As a young man I walked the borderlands, the queen of spiders on my arm. We wandered through the desert night, beneath black velvet skies and silver showers of falling stars. We fought with giants, mapped lost caverns and stole emeralds from beneath the bony fingers of lich kings in their forgotten tombs. We loved and dared and dreamed in the flames of a thousand sunsets...but that was all so long ago. She stepped from my side into new adventures, leaving no footsteps for me to follow. Now I try - and fail - to find a place to exist in the mundane and the grey. I drown in the chill waters of life's limitations, the far horizons hidden in a dull, damp sea fret. I am lost in a place of ice, with just the memory of fire to warm my soul." The album has five songs.
"Elysium" is the first. Strange electronic sounds open the song, followed by a dark, tense guitar riff, rolling bass notes, and clean vocals. The sonority increases as the song moves along, but so far it stays pretty steady. "Pathway" is a short, two-and-a-half-minute song of charming keyboards and background ambiance. You can feel his heavy heart in this song, but he presses on. "The Incongruity of I" is a heavier offering of dark landscapes and footsteps behind you. Besides the weighted bass guitar, there is not a lot of sonority to the song. It's more about the harrowing atmosphere that builds.
The title track is a smooth and uncomplicated collection of melancholy lyrics and harmonized vocals. The melodies are well developed and poignant. Imagine yourself on a hill in the countryside at night watching a star slowly fall through the sky. Imagine how you feel in that moment. "A Prisoner on the Seas" closes the album. Melancholy opening tones are replaced with heavier and angrier tones a bit later. The vocals are a bit pitchy. Although the ending sequence has a lot more sonority with some fancy drum work, much of the song was, well, quite boring for me. I hate to use that word, but I can't find a better one.
I love Progressive music, and that is a well-known fact. Maybe it's because it was a short album, or maybe because it was the band's first effort, but the album was underwhelming for me. The band are solid musicians, but much of the album wandered without a real destination, until the end, when they turned it up a few notches. Where was that energy in the other tracks? Melancholy Prog music is just fine, but you have to find a way to increase accents and dynamism, or it will fall flat, as this album did. Still, I am intrigued by some of the sounds, and would look forward to their next effort if they can tend to some of these things.
