Another French awesomeness. I can't believe the recent large amounts of Metal powerhouses in France. Most of them surge between Progressive / Hard Rock / Groove Metal, they started a certain flow, conquering territories in the worldwide Metal domain. Bands like GOJIRA (as the prime marvel and France's talent bank in my opinion), HYPNOSE, GOROD, JENX and another band from hell called TREPALIUM . That is the reason I love the modern French Metal scene and defend their music in my reviews throughout my analyses. They show a lot of potential to look up to both in technique (music) and content (lyrics and concepts). I also think this kind of music has been recently what many true Metalheads desire and their taste relies on it.
KLONE started their journey in 1999 based in Poitiers, France. "Duplicate" was their studio debut in 2003. With that album they got a bit more attention. Back then David Ledoux was their singer but he was replaced by Yann Ligner right before the next album. "High Blood Pressure" was their 2nd album released in 2004, the next "All seeing Eye" came as their 3rd album in 2009. "Black Days" came as their number four. With "Black Days" KLONE boosted their touring by visiting more than 50 venues in France and Europe. Since they got the Season Of Mist label as support they took the opportunity of finally getting known outside of France. They call their music psychedelic, intense and more progressive than ever. The band's constant high level progression sent them to perform on HellFest twice (2008, 2011) sharing the stage with giant extreme Metal acts as IN FLAMES, OPETH and MORBID ANGEL. Let me mention some other artists' activities with KLONE. Joe, GOJIRA's singer, sang on the eponymous track of their album with a slight Corey Taylor resemblance at times on this one, that's never a bad thing because let's face it he has a great voice too. Also one of the GOJIRA members said that KLONE only need time to perfect themselves. Maybe that notion came true.
The band's music instills a strong and mysterious atmosphere and that is what their music all about. It has become superior over time and even more intensified and it shows in their 5th and latest album "The Dreamer's Hideaway". As you can probably notice, depends if you listened to their earlier stuff. Unlike the previous albums there is a kind of Dreamy / Psychedelic / Mental power concepts on this album, hideaway is the best word they could dig up for that place in my opinion. KLONE tried to explain the human mind structure and how the human dreams while denial and fantasy are strong and how can one react to the changing reality. Therefore, KLONE insist to reflect on the basic human unconsciousness mechanisms and how powerful they are if known how to be used right. The album's cover has a strong correlation to the lyrics Dreaming / Day Dreaming / Fantasy as it is not such a passive action according to "The Dreamer's Hideaway". The hideaway is not an escaping place or an asylum, it's a place in one's mind that can be developed with the practice of dreams.
According to their style of music it's really about flexibility. I like the kind of mixing of saxophones and keyboard segments. KLONE'smusic has a mysterious journey within its sound and you can really feel its mental content. It's an active process that will keep you alive and on your feet. Trust me, if you deeply immerse yourself in those tracks, your adrenaline level will flow to the highest of levels. That is the main e reason why reviewers, such as myself, compare KLONE with giants like TOOL,OPETH,PANTERA, ALICE IN CHAINS and GOJIRA.I think that if you want to feel KLONE you must be a fan of GOJIRA due to their various similarities andpeculiar riff / drum paddles. The difference is that GOJIRA have fasterand shorter lyrics.
Among this 11 tracks setlist, "Into The Void" and "The Worst is Over" are my favorite tracks and in general the best around. Their content and music are really suiting and fits on and really adaptable, also I think that "The Worst Is Over" is a sort of a battle cry and vocal show of Yann Ligner. He has quite the toughest screams, and this is the most technical song when it comes to vocals. Furthermore, I conjure that "A Finger Snaps" is weaker in comparison to the other tracks and I think it could have been better. "Stratum" is the Instrumental, it's a short (1:59) track with a magical and hypnotic sound.
I have a piece of advice for KLONE to improve their music in the future: you should crop several vocals lines in each song as there are too much vocals shadowing the music. Let the rhythms flow by themselves for a change. I believe that GOJIRA's"Vacuity" is a perfect pattern and example of what I said here.
