Resignation
Karg
"Karg" means "barren" in German. KARG the band is a Post-Black Metal act formed in 2006 in Austria. They have been fairly prolific in their writing, because the new album here is their eighth, and contains six songs. "Was bleibt" is the first. There is a long, solemn, and ambient build up to the first notes, like you are slowly awaking from a dream. The vocals are shouts of rage or frustration, over top of a bed of charming guitar tones. The sound hardens around the half-way mark with darker tendencies. The string passage that follow is absolutely beautiful...like a white rose that grows in the deepest pit of hell, undisturbed by all the fire and torture.
"EBBE//FLUT" is another lengthy song that begins with a combination of aggressive guitars and some lighter, more ambient sounds. The smooth combination of desolate sounds combined with rage is working very well on the album. Take away the vocals, and you might be listening to something different altogether. Keep them in, and you can feel the intense anger. The spoken word section in the middle call out to you and make your heart ache due to the fragile beauty of the music. "Grab der Wellen" features heavier elements out of the gates with eyes of fire that threaten to burn right through you with a direct look. Unlike earlier offerings, there is only a very short cool down. I believe they want you to feel their anger in doses that you haven't felt before.
"Generation ohne Abschied" is a fourteen-minute opus that has plenty of time to develop. The sound comes out pretty quickly after the brief opening notes. The anger cannot be contained. It oozes out of every crevice with a thick coating like lava, turning what it touches to fire. Again, the sound drops to charming and audibly pleasing ambient tones with spoken words at the half-way mark. Soak them in, and let the sweet melodies slowly turn your soul black. The two competing sounds then clash together wickedly at the end, locked in mortal combat. "Einen traum weiter dort fangen wi" is a shorter and more openly beautiful song, with wondrous melodies amidst the anguished screams. Pay close attention to the melody line underneath the chaos...it is stalwart, and bright.
"Fieberherz" closes the album. It's a cover song from a band named NOTHING. Short and sweet in its length, it features thick bass notes, heavy rhythms, and beautiful backing vocals. The beautiful tones of purple on the album give you an indication of what lies within. Purple has been associated with royalty, and one interpreter called it "elaborate, replete with the trappings of majesty and ceremony. It's the favorite color of adolescent girls, and it's the color of fantasy and magic. It's half-blue, half-red, and our understanding of purple lies somewhere in between the serenity of blue and the passion of red." This is exactly what this album is...madness in composure.
