Cerebral Alchemy
Kamra
From their EPK, "As a room's confining embrace, KAMRA grabs and plunges you in a world of allegories, ruminations, and imagery with their debut "Cerebral Alchemy." There is no shortage of uneasiness intertwined with familiarity through sounds of those who came before and left their whispers for this five-piece to interpret in a disturbing, brutal, unnerving, beautiful and even caring way." The album has seven songs.
"It Burns Without a Fire..." is the first. It's a dark introduction to the album, with low, heavy, distorted tones amidst some varying background ambiance. "Death Eternal" lets you know that this is Black Metal from the first few bars...harrowing vocal screams, terror, a wall of guitars, and pounding drums take over. Towards the middle of the song, the darkness thickens into dissonant, nearly chaotic sounds. "Lantern of Ghostly Unlight" begins with tense, scary tones. It's amazing what a brush of the strings can sound like. If you aren't looking over your shoulder, you must have cold blood. Screams soon come in and it sounds like someone is being tortured. The vocals vary in style from there. One thing I don't like it harsh vocals delivered in the same method song after song. This is truly frightening music.
"Resurgence of Temporal Malignity" has a strange sound. Heavy and aggressive at first, the clean guitar passage echoes with falsetto clean vocals that sound like a madman ranting only things that he understands. The sound develops more experimental from there, with a bevy of different techniques. "Oozing the Thirteenth Hour" is a close to ten-minutes. Tense opening tones lead to more heavy and hypnotic ones in the long instrumental opener. Tortured wails follow, with some guttural vocals at times. The song dips in and out of dark passages with come clarity while other times is it saturated with grey. "Last Lamentations" is a short segue to the closer. It builds a scary sound.
"Colossal Blight" closes the album. Dark, filthy tones lead the song...the kind that don't wash off after several attempts. It takes a mellow turn a few minutes in, with clean guitars and somber tones. Dissonant tones return and make a chaotic structure of hatred and rage. It continues this way through close to the end of the song, where there is a long fade-out. This brand of Black Metal is indeed uneasy and disturbing as described in the opening paragraph. It's Black Metal at its core, but with many other elements mixed in along the way. It's more like a trip through your worst nightmares, so you have to re-live them with opened eyes. I doubt this will be a pleasurable experience, but the album definitely was.
