There are many guitar legends in Rock n' Roll music, and many of them managed to create their own signature guitar style of playing and soloing, some of those styles where copied by today's guitar heroes, but some guitar soloing techniques just could not be copied. One of these players is Joe Perry, who literally has the most unique blues based way of contracting songs and built up solos. The AEROSMITH's founding member and co-songwriter is coming out with Have Guitar, Will Travel after AEROSMITH's summer tour canceled. I must say that is a reflex reaction from Perry that nobody expected, but made a lot of people happy too.
Have Guitar Will Travel is a solid Rock n' Roll - Blues album, with Perry on all guitars and vocals. No need to comment on his guitar skills and melodies, this guy it truly awesome, but Perry's voice truly is amazing and fits great in the general picture of this album. With up-beat, vintage Rock n' Roll songs like We've Got A Long Way To Go (maybe the best song of this album), Somebody's Gonna Get (Their Head Kicked In Tonite), Scare The Cat and Freedom , some mid-tempo Blues tunes like Slingshot, Heaven And Hell, No Surprise and the instrumental Wooden Ships , while songs like Do You Wonder and Oh Lord (21 Grams) (don't know if this is a reference to the Oscar winning movie) are making Perry's collection of songs a must have for every AEROSMITH fan.
From the other hand, Have Guitar Will Travel seems like it was made in a day because of the rough, scratchy and poor mix that brings all those ideas and instrument sounds in front of the listener. As a result you can lose the melody of the song and the feeling of it. Perfect balanced sound is something you expect from a Joe Perry production.
Joey Perry is an amazing musician and he proves to be a decent vocalist too. His song writing talent is unimpeachable and Have Guitar Will Travel proves that, so the choice is yours.
