Jessica Wolff - Para Dice album cover

JESSICA WOLFF is a Finnish artist with a very busy life. She is writing and performing music, acting, doing stunt work and practicing Kung Fu. This multi-talented woman is the singer for her eponymous band. Formed in 2013, "Para Dice" is the bands third album, set to be released on 19 June 2020 on Metalapolis Records. "Para Dice" is definitely an intentionally odd spelling that perfectly fits this album. The consummate risk taker, JESSICA WOLFF the person certainly gambles with her safety as a stunt woman. As a lyricist, she takes the risk of pouring her heart and soul into this record and laying her experiences bare before the fans. The bravery pays off in a big way with twn relatable songs that will pull you in and speak to you.

The first track, "Ella's Song", has a nice opening riff that shows right off the bat this band means business. Having listened to a lot of female fronted bands recently (September Mourning, Madame Mayhem, Skarlett Riot), my initial thought was this could be just another cookie cutter band with a similar sound. Five seconds in, I knew I was wrong. JESSICA WOLFF has a serious focus on providing a sonic blast that will knock you back in your seat.

The next song, "Perfect Kind Of Wrong" keeps the disk moving along nicely with a great intro and blistering riff, leading to a catchy hook for the chorus that harkens back to 80s power ballads with their perfectly chantable lyrics. "All The Right Things" has a slight reverse of course with a mild intro and exit and power running through the chorus. Those lead us to "The Sunny Side Of The Bay", the mellow little tune that lets you relax and just enjoy a comfortable ride on a peaceful journey.

My favorite track on this disc, "Kill Switch", gets back to the harder edged, straight-forward rock while "Fight Forever" is more of a rocker with another really catchy chorus/beat combo that makes you want to play guitar or drums along with the tune. "Superhero" then tunes down again blasts you back into the metal mood. "Demons" and "Take Me Away" both have great openings, including a nice drum line at the start of "Demons" that provides an awesome opportunity to bang your head and throw a fist in the air.

The album wraps up with "Strangers", a song about a chance meeting at a hotel between two romantically linked people. As with many of the songs on this record, the lyrics deal with relationship phases. Whether talking about the beginning or the ending, having it all going right or falling apart, this album speaks to it. And as with rolling a pair of dice, relationships can be a real gamble, but when handled right, they can enter a blissful state of paradise.
