Irist - Gloria album cover

Hailing from the USA, Progressive/Sludge/Post-Metal band IRIST made the following statement on their Bandcamp page: "Creating with absolute liberation from preconceived notions, boundaries, or rules, the Atlanta quartet-Rodrigo Carvalho [vocals], Pablo Davila [guitar], Adam Mitchell [guitar], and Bruno Segovia [bass]-rotate in free orbit around gnashing Heavy Metal, anesthetizing Grunge, mind-bending Prog, and flashes of Latin-inspired rhythmic bombast." The album has five songs.

"Gloria" is the first. The sound is dark and heavy, with some Progressive leanings. One thing that you can hear right away is the band's prowess at their instruments. They attack the staccato elements with vigor and fervor, and the background has some nice melodies. "Heal" has a bit of a groove behind the harsh vocals. You have to dig just a little to discover these kinds of things in the music, because the vocals take center stage. Everything is tightly controlled...the rhythms, the cadence, and the meter. "III" is a very short song that connects the first half with the second half of the EP. It barely has time to register as music.

"Surging Ablaze" has a melodically dissonant sound, if that is possible. Depressing and sad tones combine with angry ones. The melodies come sneaking out for a few bars after the second chorus, and I say let them ride. But they are soon back in the shadows as the guitars make heavy accents to close. "Watchful Eye" features some electronica. The band is considering all angles on this EP, and I like it. Some despondent melodies rear their head but fade away on a breeze. Heavy accents follow, and are handled expertly.

Overall, this was a strong EP. I wish there were more songs, so that I could dive into their unique blend of a few different genres. The band is talented, but beyond that, have carefully crafted essentially four songs with a creative flair. The genre blending is very well done, such that you are not sure where to classify them. I am not sure what it is, but I am sure that I like it.
