Duskborn
Indren

From Bandcamp, "Between dying stars and timeless peaks, "Duskborn" emerges as a ritual of introspection and remembrance – where man finds himself a child of twilight, shaped by silence, ascent, and the majesty of the mountains." The album has eight songs, and "Autumnal Moon" is first. It eases in slowly, with clean guitars that drip with a solemn weight. A distorted riff follows, and then harsh vocals. Like a lot of Black Metal, they are scratchy and vile. It picks up a little eventually, with a bit of melody here and there, but so far, it isn't distinguishing itself from other bands in the genre. "Lyskamm" is much faster and more chaotic out of the gate, but the guitar harmonies are similar. Besides a deep layer of sadness, and perhaps even hopelessness, the first two songs haven't really given the album flight just yet.
"Inner Mountain" has another slow, crawling pace, but the riffs are ones that you have heard before. It's unlike traditional Black Metal, which usually features a wall of riffs, and the bass notes are audible, but again, it just lacks energy for me. The title track again has some of those same guitar harmonies, and it is hard to distinguish it from other songs that preceded it. "Starbound" is a short reprieve from some of the earlier aggression, and it's actually quite charming. "Embers of Dying Stars" is as depressing as it sounds, but that's where much of the sound comes from. When you picture embers (flames as they die) coming from stars that are dying, you can get that image in your mind, but it's not something that many of us will witness in our lifetimes.
"Daughter of the Twilight" has meaty bass notes in the beginning, that are swallowed by the riff, drums, and vocals. I say let them shine, it would provide the album with some more variation. "Walserland" is the final offering, and it has a little more ummph, but it's just a little late to be coming around. Overall, this wasn't a bad album, by any stretch of the imagination, but its colors were too faded to stand out in the crowd. The song titles were great, and so were its themes, but the music just felt a bit flat to me.
