In Utero Cannibalism - Playing With Dummy album cover

IN UTERO CANNIBALISM is one hell of an ambitious band, releasing "Playing with Dummy" as an EP just after they released a full-length, "Sick", in the same year. Despite what I assume must be an extremely busy schedule, IN UTERO CANNIBALISM somehow still manage to retain the quality in their music, being as unrelenting and inhumanly brutal as they've always been.

The EP has a total runtime of just less than 20 minutes, but in that short time, fans will be exposed to a surge of crazy double bass beats, blazing guitars, and heavy bass, a combination that is Death Metal at its best and most manic. But IN UTERO CANNIBALISM isn't just a straightforward Death Metal band with chugging riffs; they have more Grindcore influences, giving urgency and manic pace to their music.

The one thing that is typically as Death Metal as it can get is the vocals, which are guttural, low, and powerful. Still, vocalist Bill does occasionally summons his inner banshee, giving the vocals some real dynamics. The entire EP rings of this filthy thickness in sound, featuring a much distorted feel and heavy rhythmic lines. These boys from Greece know their Death Metal, and they don't hesitate to bring out the very best in it by employing the most extreme of sounds.

The production is clear and crisp, bringing out the best of each instrument, especially the guitars. If you're looking for a true blue escape in pure heaviness, IN UTERO CANNIBALISM new effort sounds like the kind of thing you're looking for. Even visuals are not cast aside, with an album cover heavily reminiscent of old B-movie slasher flicks - every Death Metaller's favorite pastime. Anybody who listens to Death Metal would not be disappointed by this release. It has the ability to deafen and induce hemorrhages, which is exactly the thing that gave Death Metal its rise in the first place.
