The Immortal

In Mourning

The balance on the album is superb, and it is also very emotional. There are hardened, contentious elements that are tempered with moments of pure melodic bills, unleashed at just the right time. The key to the album is the band’s unabashed power.

From Supreme Chaos’ website, “Recorded, mixed and mastered at Fascination Street Studios, Örebro in late 2024 and early 2025, “The Immortal” is dressed up in the finest of sonic clothing, yet with raw nerve and honest presence. According to Tobias Netzell, "this album has the best sounding balance between organic and modern metal I've ever heard. From the very start of the writing process. I had this vision of making the album sound incredible, massive and huge. Kind of a darker tone than previous releases, and like a cold wind blowing throughout the whole record with a slight touch of black metal." Released on August 29th, 2025, in cooperation with Dalapop and Supreme Chaos Records, IN MOURNING once again craft an emotionally intense and thought-provoking album, marking a new and bolder chapter in their storied career.”

The album has nine songs, and “The Immortal” is first; a short, instrumental mood-setter that leads to “Silver Crescent.” It charges forward with a weighted and accented riff as well as Progressive elements. When the vocals drop, the full, rich sounds unfolds. It is aggressive and somewhat somber, and the band uses harmonized leads to further the melody. “Song of the Cranes” features more Progressive elements in the way that the band maintains control of the meter. The verses are harsh, and aggressive, but the chorus is melodic, and the clean vocals help with this contrast. “As Long as the Twilight Stays” has more pensive and emotional tones. Heavy, somber bass notes thud under a bed of clean and then distorted guitars, but it’s all about the feelings here. The vocals are intense, and they explode out of the box that they are kept in.

“The Sojourner” is the first official video released ahead of the album, and it’s firm and aggressive tones let the listener know why it was chosen. It’s not without some melody mind you, but it punishes and takes no prisoners. “Moonless Sky” conjures images of the supernatural for me, and the opening music is tense, and ethereal. The tones are gentle, and somber, and it bring up different feelings for me than the more aggressive songs. “Staghorn” comes out of the gate with a contentious bite, and it is thick, even overgrown with a heavy guitar presence. The vocals are harsh and nasty. “North Star” has more somber tones, and I picture a traveler by night following its light and direction. It is beautifully balanced between melody and aggression, and each appears at just the right time. That chorus is wonderfully catchy.

The lengthy “The Hounding” closes the album, and it begins with a slow pace and somber tones that actually sound magnanimous. I get some of the raw power and emotion of IMSOMNIUM here. The harsh vocals vary from near gutturals to gut-wrenching screams that you can feel in your bones. Some of the riffs travel to unexpected places as well, leaving you on the edge of your seat. The balance on the album is superb, and it is also very emotional. There are hardened, contentious elements that are tempered with moments of pure melodic bills, unleashed at just the right time. The key to the album is the band’s unabashed power.
