Impiety - Versus all Gods album cover

Founded in 1990 and formed in Singapore, IMPIETY have released eight prior studio albums, and are surely one of the founding fathers of the Black/Thrash/Death Metal scene. "Versus all Gods" is their ninth and contains ten tracks. "Intro - Kommand IX" opens the album, with symphonic elements and a pitch of darkness. It really sounds like the marching of the army of the undead from the pit of Hell itself.

"Reigning Armageddon" goes straight for the throat, with raspy vocals and a combination of Thrash, Black and Death Metal elements. "Djinn of all Djinns" has a thrashy quality to it, but an over-reliance on the main riff. I thought this kind of music was left in the past, but it appears to be alive and well. They don't get a lot of points for originality, but the production is done well. "Barbarian Black Horde" packs a lot into a four-and-a-half-minute song. They really don't waste any notes, that is for sure. It's straightforward, in your face, extreme Metal. I can't really make out much of the lyrics, but his vocal style is sort of in-between fry and clean.

"Azazel" opens with the words "praise Hell, Azazel." Again, they mix in a variety of riffs here but none of them are ones that you haven't heard before. Some dual harmonic leads fill some of the song here as well. "Inviktus Satanikus" is a short one-minute piano piece that has a haunting but familiar melody to it. For some reason, it reminds me of the movie "Halloween." "Terror Occult Dominion" is another raging track, thick with riffs, but not enough bass guitar in the mix. It's just sort of "schticky" overall. "Dajjal United" opens with some bombast and he yells the word "fuck." The song sounds much like the others on the album. I get that they are trying to promote a certain image and sound, but it's too formulated and doesn't feel genuine. "interstellar Deathfuck" is an interesting title for a song. It's again dominated mostly by heavy guitar riffs that are switched up here and there, but there is very little melody, as could be expected.

"Magickal Wrath" closes the album, with a similar sound as the rest of the album. You could look at the dexterous guitar work as being one of the strengths of the album, or the consistency of the songs. But the latter can also work against you. It results mostly in the album blurring in front of your eyes, as the songs begin to meld together, and it's hard to tell one from another. Some fanciful lead guitar work can be heard on the album, and drummer Dizazster is one of the better musicians in the band. But the vocals are off-putting for me, and the songs just sound un-inspired to me.
