Ildfar - Som vinden farer vil album cover

ILDFAR was formed in 1994 in Viken, Norway, but never made an album release. Revived in 2018, and signed to Northern Silence Productions, ILDFAR present their debut album here, titled "Som vinden farer vil," which contains eleven tracks. "Taaleheimen" opens the album. It's a short, two-minute mood setting instrumental, and the mood is quite somber. "Under sorte vinger" is the longest on the album, clocking in at over six minutes in length. The vocals are vile shrieks, while the guitars build a little melody here and there. But, it's mostly a bleak affair.

"The Last Dawn" sounds similar to the previous track. Cold, bleak, and stripped of everything, it mires in a bog for most of the song. The echoing vocals really drive this point home. Some guitar melodies develop, but again, in the end, it's a bleak affair. "Den gamle mannen hvisker mitt navn" is a solemn, slow moving song with a lumbering pace. Some guitar harmonies expand in the background, but overall, it ends up sounding too much like the previous songs. "Som vinden farer vil" is a faster moving song that has a nice, clean, ambient passage after the first harsh passage, complete with clean vocals. It waxes and wanes this way several times throughout the song.

"Vandring" is a mysterious song that features bell strikes and something lingering in the background. A cold breeze blows over you, enveloping you with its frigid air. Spooky footsteps come in at the end. "Under the Graves)of 1994)" is a shorter, faster moving song. Some guitar melodies are present here, but it ends up sounding too similar to the other songs. The drumming is quite furious, but does not save the song. "Pesten" is super-fast, but unfortunately, sounds like the other songs. This repetitive pattern is growing old quickly.

"Behold the Throne" begins with some clean guitars and a sorrowful sound. The vocals are vile again, but there is little variation here, besides some cleans here and there. "Lyset i skumringen" is more of the same. The mood here is very somber, and there are some nice guitar harmonies, but the shouted vocals are quite annoying. "Norges haller" closes the album, and thank God this mediocre affair is over. It's a quick, three-minute song that again sound just like most of the other songs.

What is it with the promos I have been getting lately? I am kind of surprised, as Northern Silence Productions usually has stand-out artists, but they landed on a real dud here. Too many of the songs sound very similar to one another, and the album is mucked in gloom. The musicianship of "Favn" isn't too shabby, but it's not enough to save the album, which just goes downhill as it continues. The production is way too raw as well.
