Wolfheart

Iku- Turso

Overall, this was a solid album, and it stayed true to some of the traditions of the FWOBM, while branching out just enough to keep the sound more modern.

From Bandcamp, “Enter a realm forged from ice and legend, where ancestral voices still echo the strength and resilience of the wild. This powerful invocation of the North's relentless grandeur cuts through the summer's heat, captivating and inspiring, awakening the primal spirit in all who dare to enter. Embrace the darkness and awaken the primordial strength within you as we answer the call of the wild with "Pagan Beasts," where primal energy and enchanting melodies illustrate the chaos of mighty pagan warriors pillaging Christian towns, where only a single mighty oak tree is left standing amidst the ashes.”

The album has five songs, and “Pagan Beasts” is first. The music is pretty straightforward Black Metal, with scratchy vocals, thick guitars, and production that is high in the treble clef. It keeps strong within the traditions of the FWOBM, but there are also some surprises. “Gates of Hail” is another burner, that lights up the ground with fire and leaves a trail of smoke in its wake. The vocal screams would also wake the dead. From there, it settles at times, and reaches out at others, to keep the listener on their toes. “Grizzled Skies” is nearly nine minutes. It begins with slow, solemn tones, and the vocal moans pierce into your soul. Although the song grows with power throughout, the pacing remains the same, really driving home that feeling of despair.

“Midwinter” is a short segue song that is under two minutes. Double bass rolls forward, followed by some leads, and the rhythm guitars develop another sense of despair, as midwinter often will. “Beyond the Great Vast Forest” is the final cut, and it explodes out of the gate with a thick, overgrown sound. The power in the song seems to come from the underworld itself, gathering steam, and unleashing hell on earth. Overall, this was a solid album, and it stayed true to some of the traditions of the FWOBM, while branching out just enough to keep the sound more modern.
