HrabnaR/Ad Vesa is the 12th studio album from Norwegian four piece black metal band Helheim (In Norse mythology, this is the name for the realm of the dead, where those who do not reach Valhalla reside.) While the label “black metal” is often attached to their work, it feels totally inadequate here. The album is incredibly progressive in feel, and their sound transcends traditional genre boundaries. They are so much more than that label suggests.  The album consists of two distinct strands with V’Gandr (bass and vocals) and H’Grimnir (guitar and vocals), each crafting four tracks. The first half of the album was written by V’Gandr, while the second half belongs to H’Grimnir. The first half entitled HrabnaR consists of four individual tracks whilst the second half Ad Vesa consists of four interrelated tracks depicting the four parts of the soul in Norse mythology. Despite this division, it’s worth noting that V’Gandr is responsible for all the lyrics. This structure gives the listener the chance to experience two different sides of what makes Helheim such a consistently fascinating band.  Each of the tracks contains so many layers, variations, and unique elements that it’s nearly impossible to capture in a simple description. Every listen unveils something new, and the depth of creative expression on this album is truly remarkable.

The album kicks off with Geist a fast-paced aggressive track, dominated by harsh growling vocals and melodic moments. Sorg er dodens spade opens with a melodic, catchy guitar riff. Excellent vocals both harsh and clean enter the fray A haunting soundscape and repetitive elements give this track an emotional quality. Livsblot enters with an unsettling tone created by the opening dissonant guitars. The vocals both aggressively harsh and clean build tension and drama. The track culminates in a sudden, drawn out note that bring it to a haunting close. Mennesket keeps the energy high with a fast paced, rhythm heavy soundscape and harsh vocals. The second half opens with a sprawling seven minutes of Fylgia, another amazing track that stands apart with its structured rhythm and incredibly varied vocal styles. The vocals move from deep, guttural growls to cleaner, more melodic lines. The lead guitar melodies are skillfully woven throughout, making this an engaging and multifaceted composition. Haminga builds in energy and complexity, offering a mix of aggression and more subtle elements with good use of harmonics. The transitions throughout keep things interesting and maintain a powerful flow. Hugr starts with a delicate, almost ethereal vibe with harmonics and picking, the track gradually transitions into harsh vocals, blast beats and chugging guitars. The background elements add an extra layer of depth, intensifying the overall sound. The final track Hamr brings together a powerful mix of harsh vocals, intricate guitar riffs, lead guitar solos, and a compelling groove. The pacing shifts throughout, and the rhythm intertwines with a haunting soundscape to bring the album to a satisfying conclusion

This album captivates from the first listen, drawing you in with its intricate layers that keep you coming back time and time again. It showcases exceptional instrumental skill, brilliant arrangements, and boundless creativity. Words can't fully capture the depth of innovation on display here….
