Dust and Echoes
Hollow Leg

From Bandcamp, “HOLLOW LEG began as a duo from Jacksonville in 2009. Added two pieces in 2011 and now hailing from the highways between Orlando and Deland, Florida. The tying bind continues their affinity for the roots of American Blues music and English metal. That love outpours with angst, pessimism, and a creative fighting spirit forged from the scope of working class musicians.” The album has nine songs, and “Last Tribe” is first. It crosses a few genres…the vocals are harsh screams, and the guitars are blues based. Throw in some sludgy sounds, and this is what you get. It’s riff based Metal, and the riffs are bossy.
“Bury our Kings” is another hard rocking song that moves with energy. The music is fairly simple, but combined with the edgy vocals, it makes its point known. The music is also tinged with darkness. “Sick Days” is another straightforward song, and the band doesn’t deviate from the formula they used much at all. This makes fans happy, for the most part, but it doesn’t typically gain them many newer ones. Just a general observation. “Funeral Storms” is a slower, and darker offering, capitalizing on the band’s sense of the macabre. I also get a landscape painted with desolation, and despair. “Red Skies” has a commanding riff, and angry, shouted vocals. It’s almost as if they saved up much of their rage for this song.
“Another Day Dying” has a bit more energy, and pep to it, along with a ferocious bite in the vocals. Much of the life in the song is from the brutal riff. “Ride the Wave Dig the Grave” is really the first song with a bit of variation. It is pulled out of the swampy waters and takes on a life of its own. Sure, the vocals are still raging but the ferocity of the riff is dialed back a bit. “Holy Water” is the final song, and it drips with the blues, and also has some pessimism with the lyrics, “everything lost, everything gone, everything washed away.” The album was quite straightforward, and quite homogeneous, but that didn’t take away my ability to enjoy the music. It’s a blue collar kick in the face.
