Hit 'N' Mizz - Action album cover

HIT 'N' MIZZ is a "female-fronted" Hard Rock band from Brisbane, Queensland, AU. "Action" is the group's debut EP, released independently on January 15, 2021.

"Action" recalls the ferocity and fire of Hard Rock girl groups like THE RUNAWAYS and GIRLSCHOOL while updating the sound of those groups. Mizzie Maxx sings with the rasp of Debbie Harry, the range of Pat Benatar and the attitude of Joan Jett. But rather than relying on the Punk Rock aggression of these predecessors, the music of HIT 'N' MIZZ has a lot more in common with newer Hard Rock bands like ROYAL BLOOD and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. Ambient, brooding, and incredibly dark, "Action" is clearly a reinterpretation of the female-fronted Rock band paradigm.

"Devil's Ganna Bring You Down" opens the EP with a folky, thunderous drum beat and a hauntingly simple chord progression that conjures up images of being stranded in the Outback. Maxx's voice is incredibly powerful on this track, at times sounding like an even raspier Miley Cyrus. "Patronize" starts with a really catchy riff that sort of sounds like something DEF LEPPARD would write before breaking into a groovy, dance-y section.

"Insane" is a highlight, with its slow buildup and emotional chorus. Maxx's vocal performance on this track convincingly portrays the pain she is expressing in the lyrics, and the reverb-y, spaced out guitar parts recall at times both U2 and LED ZEPPELIN. Finally, the EP ends with the title track, which is definitely the sleaziest song on the album. Cheeky moans and cowbell hits abound as Mish provides blazing riffs and Shep pounds away at the drums. Needless to say, this is definitely not a song you should play in the presence of children.

All in all, this EP is pretty cool. Mizzie Maxx has what it takes to be an incredible frontwoman and she delivers in spades. Thankfully, HIT 'N' MIZZ's debut EP was a hit, not a miss.
