Canonisation of the Foul Spirit
Hell Militia

From Bandcamp, “The album comprises 10 tracks (Psalms) with a professional but not too clean studio production allowing for each instrument to be easily distinguished from one another without resulting in sounding polished or sterile. The riffs, which are not too far removed from what one can hear on some of the albums, the members have had a hand in and the quality of the songwriting disclose the fact that HELL MILITIA are anything but newcomers. Listening to him preaching the false gospel and spewing foul bile in his characteristic, unmistakable way of madness is certainly one of the highlights of “Canonisation of the Foul Spirit.”
The album has ten songs, and “Burning Human Pigs” is first. The entering riff is very cold, dark, and low, and in comes the blast beat drumming, meaty bass notes, and harsh vocals. The vocal delivery is a bit unique…they aren’t fully harsh, and they sting with a depressive quality of despair. “Black Arts of Crime” is another dreadfully depressing sound, and it echoes the album title in the sense that we all have a foul spirit at times. It picks up in pace after the half-way mark but that filthy, dirty sound remains strong. “Prophecy from the Mutilated Children” roars out of the gate with aggression, but again, the cold, hopeless tones remain the cornerstone of the band’s music. The vocals sound like filthy wails at times.
“Dead Children’s Choir” has a similar sound and pace, and at this point in the album, this is what you can expect. I appreciate a little more diversity personally. “Black Fucking Cancer” has a little more pace to it, but the central sound remains the same. It seems the band is hell bent on ramming this sound down your throat. “Blood from the Pig” features faster blast beat drums, but the song are now running together completely, so that one is indistinguishable from the next. “Ritual” has a similar sound, and that’s all that I can say at this point. The closer, “Years Ago,” is an ALICE COOPER cover, and it’s a twisted cover that fits in quite well with the band’s music.
Overall, this wasn’t a bad album by any stretch of the imagination, it’s just that too many of the songs sounded the same. This is often a rookie mistake, or the mark of a band who know how they want to sound. I believe it is the latter, but for their next release, I would push them into a little more experimentation and/or diversity.
