Djent outfit HELD IN SECRET has released their debut EP "Nomads." This group out of Ottawa boasts some interesting blends of Djent and Metalcore. Add to that the various Progressive elements used, that also create some well thought layers, giving the listener something to dive into. The band is relatively new, formed in 2017 but are laser focused on the sound they seek to create. Aggressive Djent with bridging Metalcore melodies.
"Ties" is the first track off the EP, where we really get a firm sense of the sound that HELD IN SECRET is producing. The riffs are Djent right out of the gate giving some interesting tones. The track then breaks into a solid chorus that gives us a taste of their melodic skills. It moves into savage vocals with heavy instrumentals. This track also lets the bassist shine with a ridiculous solo at the end. "Nomads" is definitely my favorite track off this EP. The band has a guest appearance and vocal performance from SILENT PLANET'S Garrett Russell to make a riveting and enthralling single. The beginning of the song offers a synth melody that explodes into a ferocious vocal explosion. The duelling vocal lines are very well done and make an interesting layer to the song. When both vocalists go to a lower register, it really brings a sense of power to the track and the EP. Towards the end, the heavy instrumentals abruptly end giving way to a soft melody with an ethereal vocal performance.
"Downcast" begins with a slow guitar melody that continues to build in intensity and aggression giving way to a savage vocal performance. A track that changes tones constantly, giving it an eclectic feel that works. It's like listening to a turbulent sea that has no direction but is held together by that chaos. That chaos takes on its own form of continuity. "Gaia" offers a soft melody from the reprieve of the chaos but only briefly. The track then descends into heavy instrumentals and eviscerating vocals. The chorus is a beautiful yet melancholic melody that grips the listener. The choruses and verses are clearly defined in this track but the instrumentals give it a good sense of unpredictability.
HELD IN SECRET has given the Metal community a solid Djent debut with "Nomads." While they do sound similar to some of the bands within the Djent genre, their ability to expand on that sound with Progressive elements will leave them a lot of room for experimentation with their work later on. The sound is solid as well as their direction. I am excited to see what this band will produce on their next release.
