Long-running Canadian AOR/melodic rock outfit HAREM SCAREM has been an influential staple in the genre for 30-plus years. Formed in 1987 - including a short hiatus from 2008-2013 - the band is undoubtably on top of its game.
On its 15th full-length album "Change the World" (released March 6 via Frontiers Music s.r.l.), the quintet, featuring original vocalist Harry Hess and guitarist Pete Lesperance, on-and-off again drummer Darren Smith turned singer on backing vocals, drummer Creighton Doane and bassist Mike Vassos, possesses its trademark traits; soaring vocal harmonies, infectious guitar riffs and insanely-catchy choruses.
Album opener and the title track immediately grabs the listener with its memorable chorus and engaging, melodic guitar harmonies, while the short and sweet "Aftershock," at three-plus minutes, is decorated with a huge, melodious chorus. From the AOR/'80s hard rock flavor of "Searching For Meaning," to the Beatles-esque ballad of "Mother Of Invention," to the '70s classic rock of "Riot In My Head," HAREM SCAREM has crafted a stunning repertoire.
Of course, the musicianship of the band on "Change the World" is top-notch. The signature riffing and memorable guitar leads of Lesperance has been a longtime staple of the band, while the exceptional lead vocals of Hess and equally impressive backing vocal harmonies of Smith are out of this world. In addition, the production is massive; polished and pristine with an engaging and robust sound.
HAREM SCAREM has proven once again that it knows what it's doing when it comes to creating hook-laden, anthemic, melodic rock tunes.
