An EP by a band that impressed me is the past. That was the reason I asked to be able to this review of HALCYON WAY. These guys hail from Atlanta in Georgia, USA and thus far have released four full-length albums. The latest one is from 2018, so it was about time that some new stuff way would see the light of day. It finally has arrived in the form of three songs, together forming the “Night Crawling” EP.

The first song is a cover of a MILEY CYRUS song. There are a few elements of “Night Crawling” that I really like. First off, the main riff has been adjusted in such a way that it could easily have been produced by SAVATAGE. It gives the tune just that extra bit of pizzazz. Plus they have been able to seamlessly incorporate some parts of the chorus of the BILLY IDOL song “White Wedding” into the mix. Well done guys. I have a feeling that if Miley hears this rendition, she will be smiling, and even might want to sing it live with HALCYON WAY if she ever gets the chance. “Insufferable” has another comparison, which is MEGADETH. Not only the main riff could have been penned by Dave Mustaine, also the way the voice is used in the song will regularly remind you of the (former) ginger Metal Master. Plus that way the drums and the guitars interact, it shows a lot of MEGADETH influences. But in the chorus it does change into a HALCYON WAY tune. I like this one too.

“Stand For Something” is the one that has more of dirty party vibe. It rocks, it swings, but it is also very easy on the ears. At the same time it has a bit of a thrashy attitude, making me think of the kind of music that MANITOBA’S WILD KINGDOM used to make when they were around. It is the last song on this short “Night Crawling” EP, and it shows how divers HALCYON WAY are able to be. I haven’t scored this one too high, as I would have liked to hear more music after six years, but most of all, I would have like less comparisons with others and more of their own sound. Alas, such is not to be, but we can only hope that when the next album is let loose on the world they correct this.
