High Impact Violence
Gutless
Alright, mate, what have we here? (Imagine that in the most Australian accent possible.) What we’ve got is a violent and senselessly aggressive onslaught of death metal, clawing its way straight from the depths of the seventh circle of hell. The band, fittingly named GUTLESS, couldn’t have picked a better name for their sound. These lads have spilled their guts into this record. Their album, "High Impact Violence",confirms this bands' knack for finding the right names to their craft. From start to finish, this album delivers a punishing yet groovy experience. By the time it’s over, your face will be sore from grinning at its sheer malevolence. It’s mean, vile, sick, and repulsive; everything you need for a perfect death metal album. And just when you think death metal has said all it can, GUTLESS breathes new life into the genre. While sticking to the tried-and-true formula, they inject it with a uniquely Australian flair that makes their sound fresh and distinctive.
Every hallmark of death metal is here. “Galvanised” the album’s fifth track, exemplifies their ability to set a horrific tone. The song opens with eerie screams and ominous chugs that feel like you’re being dragged through mud, only to crush you moments later with relentless blast beats. The atmosphere is further enhanced by their lead guitar work. On “Carved into Existence” for instance, the solo sounds like it’s echoing straight out of a torturous hellscape—a highlight among many moments where their leads add depth to the album’s unholy vibe. As for the album cover? Let’s just say it’s… divisive. Whether it’s an intentional joke, a stab at irony, or simply a poor artistic choice, it feels at odds with the sonic horrors it’s meant to represent. Production-wise, GUTLESS nails the balance between raw and refined. The unfiltered, organic mix preserves the genre’s gritty essence, yet every instrument is crystal clear. The drummer’s energy punches through, and the guitars are perfectly filthy without descending into noise.
