Zasypia
Gorycz

GORYCZ is an Avantgarde Black Metal band based out of Poland. "Zasypia" is the band's third full-length album, and it has 10 songs. "Kocha" is first. The opening tones are gentle, but somber, and tense. Drums come in, and the sound hardens, and then the full scope of the song begins to take shape…it's dark, hardened, and depressive at times, although the leads provide some melody here and there. There is a combination of clean, despondent vocals, and harsh, angry ones, and the song gains steam as it moves. The tension that hangs in the air could be cut with a knife. "Budzi" has darker tones from the beginning. For me, it's like looking up at the night sky that is shrouded in dark clouds. Heavy bass notes enter, and the song grows even darker. Next, comes harsh vocals, and they drive the darkness into your heart like a dagger.
"Tanczy" begins with clean and somber tones once more, and the atmosphere is again cloudy and grey. The vocals are a combination of intense anger and frustration, and thick bass notes keep the song's weight. "Pije" has an almost jovial beat from the opening riff, until the other instruments join and it steps back into the shadows once more. Anger usually takes over at some point, and this song is no exception. "Zdradza" enters with a bit of a saunter, almost like a fanged creature who strolls through the park at night ready for another victim. The vocals are absolutely horrid, and you catch glimpses of the killer's shiny blade sinking into another person's skin. They paint the darkness as completely normal, yet the screams say otherwise.
"Wybacza" is dark from the first note, and the atmosphere and tension the band keeps on the album is an unbreakable thread. It's like being locked underground your entire life…you can do the things you want, but never see the sun. "Milczy" enters with tentative tones that almost tease you into believing that it is without burden. A hasty, jovial beat ensues, with bass notes that thud like crashing waves. Darkness settles in once more, and it goes from bad to worse. "Błądzi" crawls forward with heavy bass guitar notes and an occasional guitar chord. The vocals are harrowing, and leave no doubt where your downward climb is headed.
"Starzeje" is a wolf in sheep's clothing…the wolf being the vocals and the sheep the music, at first. The music comes around to match the level of intensity soon after. His footsteps grow increasingly heavier until he is ready to stomp on your head. The title track is the final song, and it's another dark song with a hasty pace. This time, they make no bones about what is presented…it's death in human clothing. This is an impossible album to pigeonhole into a specific genre. Darkness is really the only constant, and it's pervasive. I also appreciate how the band lures in the listener with semi-jovial tones only to slice your throat clean through. It's a unique, but very troubling sound.
