Gorrch

In many ways, it’s the purity of the album that makes it so compelling. I don’t usually like a tracklist where each song has a similar pace, but this one, goes so deep underground and so far into the stars, I don’t mind. A warning however…don’t listen to this album in the dark, because its fury and vengeance might close your eyes forever.

GORRCH is a Black Metal band, and this album came to me without a press kit. So, we are going to have to let the music do the talking. The album has six songs, and out of the gate, "Nimbus" is both pitch back and scope, aggressive, and absolutely harrowing. It climbs the ladder higher and higher, with a hastier sound that seems to get more intense with each passing bar. "Vorago" is equally as fast and aggressive as the previous song, and the raging intensity never lets up. It's as if the band stepped on the gas pedal, fired up the nitrous, and scorched a tire path on the road with pieces of rubber left behind. The wall of guitars is primarily responsible for that frightening feeling that you just can't shake.

"Larvae" sports eerie sounds that make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and it's another burner, leaving a trail of rocket fire behind it as it passes. It sounds like a swarm of bees that gets stronger and with more numbers as it moves, and a heightened sense of death just hangs in the air. "Cryptae" has more of a traditional Black Metal sound, with that "one step, half step lower" riff pattern at times, but again, it's another lightning speed composed song. It slows just enough to let the evil soak in like a thick black liquid that begins at your feet and ends when it reaches your head. Segueing into "Angor," the blistering and harrowing sound continues without compromise. There are also some very frightening vocal chants, and it's reminiscent of torture to me.

"Phlegma" is the final song, and in keeping with the sound of the first five songs, it's uncompromising. Fast, aggressive, and harrowing, it keeps you locked into the heightened awareness that surrounds you. In many ways, it's the purity of the album that makes it so compelling. I don't usually like a tracklist where each song has a similar pace, but this one, goes so deep underground and so far into the stars, I don't mind. A warning however…don't listen to this album in the dark, because its fury and vengeance might close your eyes forever.
