The Legend of Johnny Gnasch

Gnasch

The album is crushing, in the way that time turns the ashes of Kings into dust. In death, we all are insignificant. As I mentioned above, it also points to a repetitive cycle that most humans find themselves caught up in and don’t question it. Shit, there has to be more to life than this, doesn’t there?

Hailing from Bristol, UK, GNASCH calls their music "sewer sludge." Formed in 2022, this is the band's sophomore effort, titled "Taste Your Own Medicine," and it has seven songs. "Alcohellic" is first. The greasy, dirty, and sludgy sound is evident from the first riff strike. The production is perfect for this style of music, and it feels like you wandered into a tar pit and came out black on the other side. "Mislead" moves a little faster but the riff is still absolutely filthy, and it creates a groove that you can easily move along with. Scratchy, screamed vocals lead the way in this song, and there is also plenty of feedback in the guitars.

"Decline" is a seven minute opus with a towering riff, and I get the visual of a giant lumbering through a city and destroying it building by building. The ground rumbles beneath his feet, as a thick cloud of dust rises from each step. "Hemlock" takes a gentler route at first, with some clean tones, but they are still quite dark in scope. Hemlock is of course a poison, and the singers muted ramblings sound like someone who is dying from it. "Leecher" is the first single released from the album, or, at least, the only video I could find on youtube. It has a steadier pace to it, but man does it still have a black soul. There are also some mysterious tones here, almost like you discovered a secret swath of earth that no human had ever traversed.

"Erase" is a two-and-a-half minute pounder. The riff moves with confidence and power, and the vocals keep the sound as nasty as possible. "Proclivity" is the final song, and it's a beast, clocking in at over ten minutes. The title means "a tendency to choose or do something regularly," and that couldn't be more fitting for an album that sounds like a succession of grey and rainy days that lasts for over a month. You drag yourself out of bed, get dressed, go to work, drive home, eat, go to bed, and then rise and repeat. It's one of the more useful songs I have heard that illustrates this repetitive cycle most humans find themselves in.
