Gloom - Rider of the Last Night album cover

GLOOM is a Black Metal band based out of Finland. With no webpage or any social media presence, all I have to go on is that this is their debut album, and contains eight tracks. Black Metal can go one of two ways...the FWOBM traditional method, or the more expansive method we hear in later years. "Bleed" leads off the album. It's pretty clear that it's the traditional method here...a wall of guitars, screaming vocals, and thunderous drumming, for a total of three minutes.

"Iron Claws of Black Metal" brings more of the same, though it is a bit longer in length. The vocals rage endlessly, and the guitars and drums hold a steady, unrelenting pace. Cymbals crash through the final note. "Fuck your Faith" is much like the previous tracks. The guitars hit you hard out of the gate, as do the drums, and the vocal shrieks. The sound is absolutely furious, but does not branch out from the borders of the genre much. "Deep in the Ground" sounds almost identical to the previous track, in both the rhythm and the pacing. They are really not doing much to distinguish themselves from the thousands of other Black Metal bands out there.

"No Mercy after Sunset" sounds just like the other songs on the album. The titles could be interchangeable, as there is nothing different here than on any other song on the album. Repetition is one thing that I do not like on an album. "Murder Yourself" is more of the same. Man they are not even trying to do anything different, in either the vocals or the instrumentation. It's the same bloody thing over and over. "By your own Hands" is close to seven-minutes in length. The opening riff is just a little different, featuring a major chord instead of a minor chord, but from there, it is exactly the same sound. There is a slight variation around the half way mark, where the vocals drop off a bit.

"Rider of the Last Night" closes the album, and thank God this is the final track. This album as a whole did nothing to advance the genre of Black Metal. Sure, they are purists at heart, that part I get. But repetitive songs and the same sound over and over really made for a hard listening experience. I would unfortunately not recommend this to anyone outside of Black Metal purists. Even then, I would say if you are up for a repetitive listening experience, then go for it.
