Gauntlet

Gam

Overall, this is about as straightforward as Metal gets, but it wasn’t uninteresting to me. The best parts are the deep gutturals and the cavernous sounds of the riffs for me.

From Bandcamp, “GAM, forged by fire and fury in Sweden and inspired by acts such as ASPHYX, IMMORTAL, and DEICIDE. Previously known as VULTURE, they released “Humanity is a Disease” in 2014 and “The Abortion of Mother Mary” in 2011. GAM continued to spread their hateful gospel with the album “Crowned and Reborn” testifying to their suffocating brutal style. Their newest EP, titled “Iron Gaunlet,” has four songs.  “In the Absence of Light” is first. It’s heavy, aggressive, and has slow, powerful riffs. The vocals are guttural and you get some Black Metal sprinkled in with the Death and Thrash roots. Fire and fury? You bet. I hear both. “Begging for the Whip” moves slowly, like a giant roaming the hillside. Each step reverberates a thud in the ground, and it echoes far away. More horrid, guttural vocals carry the desolate and frigid sound forward. “Wounds of God” is both faster and more raucous, and the energy of the song is challenged through the sturdy riffing. The weight of the vocals just really hit me in this song…they are ravenous. “Worship and Obey” is the final cut, and it’s a return trip to the buffet of decaying flesh, maggots, rotted corpses and blood to wash it down. Overall, this is about as straightforward as Metal gets, but it wasn’t uninteresting to me. The best parts are the deep gutturals and the cavernous sounds of the riffs for me.
