Funeralopolis
Metal maniacs, rejoice! I am proud to present to you: FUNERALOPOLIS; signed via Memento Mori, hailing from Switzerland grounds - performing Death/Doom Metal, on their debut album entitled: "...Of Deceit And Utter Madness" (released April 27th, 2020).
Since formation in 2009 the quartet in question have a Demo entitled "...Of Death" (released September 1st, 2010); an EP entitled "...Of Prevailing Chaos" (released March 1st, 2013), 2 Compilations the first being "...Of Prevailing Death" (released January 15th, 2016), the 2nd being a compilation of the Demo and EP combined into one compilation "...Of Death/...Of Prevailing Chaos" (released July 22nd, 2019) & this here debut album that I am introduced to entitled: "...Of Deceit And Utter Madness". 10 tracks ranging at around 38:17; FUNERALOPOLIS arrange an intricately designed formula of some hard-hitting Death/Doom amalgamations.
The "Intro" opens up the record with this sombre yet fun-driven aesthetic as if were placed in an amusement park, leading up to an insane laugh of maniacal proportions with the second track "Crawling Caskets". A blistering barraged frenzy of this rawly rough synergy; merging the deadliness of volatile yet primitive Death Metal savagery, with the gnarly distortion of the Doom Metal manifestations while the quintessential virtuosity meticulously fabricates a boisterously bouncy element of uniquely versatile vehemence and crunchy tightness. Trailblazing with neck-breaking flamboyancy with profusely robust pandemonium, the unlikely foursome embellishes an experimental whirlwind of groovy hybrids and an immersive implementation of monstrously meaty mayhem.
Consisting of Thuri on vocals/guitar; the frontman excels at a concrete fretwork, dimensional firepower that showcases this sonically seamless pursuit of chaotic chugging, galloping & frolicking maelstroms with punchy jumpiness, while piledriving this rapidly swift nimbleness which portrays potently vibrant snappiness. While vocally unleashing these raspy shrieks of throaty yells, shouting with this organic roar of guttural growls and ferocious barks blend an blasphemous attribute in which wonderously crafts a chunky characteristic of possessed madness. "House Of West" demonstrates a complex dynamic; diligently detailing dextrous harmonies that shred with ripping momentum, pumping out sinister retribution while oscillating this rampantly melodious malevolence that oozes out a healthy dose of sulphurously fluid finesse. Pascal on the second guitar distributes more twin-guitar attacks, fuelled to the brim which prodegiously enlightening establishments of fulfilling bludgeoning hooks and demonic hostility. Hastily armed with this explosive arsenal of tenacious thuds, while harnessing extreme aggression & a frantically charged calamity which triggers with speedy velocity while thrashing with salubriously zestful songwriting musicianship.
"Witchcraft Horror" systematically spellbinds you with punishing yet thunderously skyrocketing trembles that ruthlessly rumble with reverberating solidities, this here is the kind of death-doom that supplies this panache of outrè bulldozing...berserking you while rampaging with the stampeding quakes & vicious substance that shrouds this looming presense of ominously groundbreaking grinds. Lacerating killer licks that rush with wildly rowdy stability, tempestuously storming furocious blast-beats with monolithic tempos provide this moody vibe of proficient vibrato patterns that brilliantly blow your speakers so you can break chairs over other chairs in a delirium hysteria that will haunt eardrums and souls to the point of ritualistic satanism. Audible bassist Nico thumps the production with pulsating overarchs of bruising brutality, heralding into a mass strum of progressively technical profanity...swamping you with stomping pummelling & sludgy havoc in a consistent flow. "Devouring Crypts Of Darkness" is an eerily daunting slab that applies an intensely impactful enrichment that pleases one with bombastic blitzkrieg; foreboding a borderline foundation of quantum ramifications, relentlessly imploding a crisp furnace of hell-raising mettle that revels with jacked uproar & upbeat ruination. Powerhouse drummer Mike hammers his set with steely precision, rambunctiously battering into a high-octane silver-lining of rompy slams & visceral integrity. Distilling a chiselling contrast of machine-gun bolts, immersively evolving into a droning but inventive illustration of primal might & sophisticated fundamentals in which wails with weighty perseverance.
"Downfall" is much shorter yet persistently juxtaposes aforementioned distinctions into an outrageous scattering of colossal craziness, offering lightning-fast remedies that will smash windows or at least make you want to feel like you must breakdown onto them. While advancing into a breif 0:40s interlude within the titular track; which sounds like an outtake from a horror film which sets the tone splendidly with the second portion of the record unveiling more mellifluously euphonic artistry unearthing otherworldly boundaries in the menacing "The Envenomed King," venomously injecting infectiously slimy slaying of stark but blackened adrenaline and amplified assimilation. Conjuring up this sizzling sweltering of virulent surges that takes over with this slick bassline, flickering with this thick layer...until more muddy performances subtly entices a thrilling subjugation over you to crush and headbang in a diabolical sense of wicked yet evil empowerments...embodying a demented boast of bewitching dominance. The penultimate track
"Into Unknown Kadath" converges black death thrash tribulations remarkably within this delicious atmosphere of mind-blowing mettle; the doomy bits are there too, just with the endless carnage in place this can be slightly off to find. It's still a fine slice of distinguished grit, efficacious instrumentation & enthralling but nothing short of linearity equalities that will take your attention in no time. Overall concluding "...Of Deceit And Utter Madness" with the epic finale of "Endzeit Burial" this adventurous deliverence brought forth an impressive forge of spontaneous death-doom discoveries that reward you with a continuous replay value, and a enjoyably entertaining experience that most definitely deserves a good handful of spins.
Bottom line; I am compelled to say that FUNERALOPOLIS certainly outdone themselves with this one, for a debut album...a band of this calibre could definitely contend for the replacement of DEATH masterminds with this impressive fusion of everything black-death-doom & thrash sub-genre culminations. A discovery worthy of your time - check it out!
