Upheaval of Necromancy
Funeral Vomit

Back in December, Colombia-based metal band Funeral Vomit released their second album, "Upheaval of Necromancy," via Xtreem Music. This marks their eighth release, stacking up with singles, demos, and a gaggle of split projects with bands from Mexico to China. Funeral Vomit offers straight-up death metal with no gimmicks, so they really need to bring it to stand out in the sea of death metal.
A common modern trope, an "Intro (The Disentombment)" kickstarts the album. I guess it does its job of building a musical setting well, but it's pretty boring and goes nowhere. I expect the interlude and the outro to follow in this "song's" footsteps. "Upheaval of Necromancy," the first metal song, starts with an eerie sample. The music is, of course, bare-bones death metal. The mixing, however, is tinny and unpleasant to listen to. The burpy vocals, paired with the album cover, remind me of a Demilich clone. One track in and I'm already on the fence. "Sulphuric Regurgitation" follows the path of the title track. Seriously. The mixing sounds like a demo from the 90's. The guitars and bass are crumbling, and the drums are basic. The guitar solo sounds quite good compared to everything else, but it's musically uninteresting. The process of looking up the title for "Hematophagia" was the best part about the song. Hematophagia is the process of feeding on an animal's blood. The first chunk of the album wraps up with an "Interlude (Mortuary Ecstasy)." By now, I've crafted my opinion that Funeral Vomit is blatantly going after Demilich, but with worse mixing.
"Winds Of Exhumation" stays the same in terms of sound. The hollow riffage and snares do absolutely nothing for me, and these attributes are present in following songs like "Altars Of Doom" (a much shorter track), "Cryptic Miasma Stench" (a slower and doomier track, reminiscent of early Demilich), and "Rancid Inorcism." After the "Outro (Effluvia Of The Mass Grave)," we're done.
We all know the band Funeral Vomit seems to be after with their newest LP, "Upheaval of Necromancy." This death metal album is nothing I've ever heard before - quite the opposite, actually. The mixing and lack of identity harm the positive aspects of this album, that being its technical prowess.
