Fragment Through Hollow Eternity
Funeral Skies

From Bandcamp, "This album is a powerful journey exploring the cycle of existence. From the moment something is "born" to the moment it "fades away." In short, it is an instrumental experience that lets you feel the physics of life and death through pure sound rather than speech." The artists are from Indonesia, and I believe this is the first album I have heard from a band in that country. The album has eight songs, and "Genesis: The Zero-Point Field" is first. The opening tones are playful and jovial, and even though the riffs have a firm, heavy edge to them, the melody shines through and above. The positive vibes of the song just make you feel good. "Tessellation of the Void" is another strong and energetic offering, and if the album keeps this up, I will be happy. Chugging guitar rhythms hold down the bottom end while lead breaks dance overtop. It reminds me of an endless summer.
"Entropy: The Great Attractor" is slower and more ambient in nature. It feels like that small window that exists when you are just waking up from a nice dream. The second part of the song title, "Synapse Hemorrhage" is equally as bright, and this band builds memorable melodies. I have always maintained that this singular thing might be the hardest part about writing music. The piano notes are wonderful, and they play in tandem with the guitars. "Monoliths of Non-Existence" uses some atmosphere and delicate melodies to set the mood, and I feel like I was just given all the time in the world to contemplate our existence. Again, the melodies are positive, strong, and shiny, and the lead breaks shoot higher than the horizon itself. "Axiomatic Desolation" is another winner. They hold tension in restraint at times, and then let the melody fly out. There are also violin notes here, and although it can be a sad sounding instrument, it sounds gleeful here.
The final song is divided into two parts. "Eternity: Ex Nihilo" is first. The melody line is simple, but quite effective, and when the violin joins in, it's like a love party for two. Champagne…flowers…candy, and your beau. The second part, "Ad Nihilum," is heavier, but the same melody runs through its veins. It ebbs and flows like the tide…effortlessly…purposefully, and leaves you with a jolt of energy to get you through the rest of your day. This was an absolutely fantastic album. Not only is the trio musically gifted at their instruments, they write melodies that are straightforward, high reaching, and just a joy to listen to. Pop this in on a long drive, and the time will pass peacefully.
