The M.E.T.A.L Fest
Freedom Call
Freedom Call are a band I am not familiar with and took some research. Founded in 1998 by Chris Bay, who seems to be the sole consistent member to date. I am not saying the band has the sort of family tree a WHITESNAKE or DEEP PURPLE has, but it does seem to be a feeder for other similar German (Power) Metal bands such as HELOWEEN and GAMMA RAY, both bands who are immediately bought to mind listening to Freedom Call, they are definitely in that bracket, and that is a high benchmark! On the basis of this live album (recorded over two shows, Pilsen and Regensburg, their self-proclaimed description of "Happy Metal" is appropriate. Their take on this very
Germanic brand of Power Metal is very catchy, melodic and generally upbeat. For me whilst quite listenable, and obviously accomplished musically, some of the songs were perhaps a little lightweight and came across as Power Pop rather than Metal ("The Ace Of The Unicorn" you know I mean you), which ultimately for me makes it quite forgettable. Perhaps a live album isn't the best exposure to a band. Being in the audience would I've no doubt been a different experience. The songs I liked the most were "Metal Invasion", very upbeat example of how to do Power Metal well. "M.E.T.A.L" a proper fist-pumping anthem to our music! "Freedom Call" not exactly their "Iron Maiden" or "Motorhead" but as the song that carrier their name, it does sum up the band to a tee.
The aforementioned "The Ace Of The Unicorn" , "Power And Glory" and "Far Away", sorry just too sugary sweet for me. I think an 18 track live album (OK one studio track, and that was not needed) was too much of a step for the virgin to Freedom Call like myself. An album for the steadfast fan, of which I am sure there are many, but as much as I wanted to like this, Teutonic Power Metal is something I do like, it was just too much for me, sorry Freedom Call.
