Angel in the Dark

Freakstorm

For a cover band to evolve into a rock band with their own sound and personality is quite a feat and also deliver on a high level is another thing. Can FREAKSTORM be that band?
December 30, 2023

In the year, 2016 FREAKSTORM was founded as a tribute project. The first song which the band recorded was a cover of “Here’s to Us” by HALESTORM. The goal to hand this track over to their idols personally (which indeed happened), giving vocalist Sinah Meier and drummer Olli Fuchs the motivation to record their own songs. After the self-released EP "We Got The Fire" (2018) and the EP “From Zero” (2019), a new era for FREAKSTORM began when they started to work with producer Dennis Ward (HELLOWEEN). He supported the band to develop a rich rock sound – a strong fundament for Sinah’s powerful and clear voice. In the year 2021 the musicians fulfilled their dream to release their first full-length album "Storm Inside My Heart", bringing us to their latest full-length album “Angel in the Dark” which was released on November 24, 2023. I can see the headlines now, extra extra, read all about it “Cover band wins Grammy”, okay, I’m getting a little over the top, so we’ll let their music do the talking and put the Paparazzi on hold till further notice.

A great start on the opening track “Fight To The End” with nice melodic edgy riff paced with a bouncy, foot stomping beat as the warm, playful vocals enter to create an ear pleasing, high-energy song. The next two tracks “Stop The Fire” and “Creature Of The Night” both have such an effervescent vibe and rocking good feel and attitude that will have you toss your inhibitions out the window and dance like a four-year-old child. The title track “Angel in the Dark” is a ballad that can be described in one word, beautiful and mesmerizing…sorry two words, beautiful, mesmerizing and tender….sorry three words, beautiful, mesmerizing, tender and engaging….sorry four words….okay, I’ll stop here, you get my drift. Covering “Big City Nights” (SCORPIONS) and “Paparazzi” (LADY GAGA), showcases the vocal diversity of Sinah Meier as she nails both songs whilst putting her own personal Avant-grade stamp firmly on these two classic songs. “You Destroy Me” is another elegant ballad brought to life with soft, warm acoustic guitar accompanying the impassioned vocal delivery. “Stop The Fire” gets us back rocking with a galloping riff and a smidge of dirty/thrash vocals tossed in, which I did not see coming, producing a hard, edgy song.

“Angel in the Dark” is beautifully crafted between hard and heavy, melodic, a tease of thrash, AOR, and even a playful smidge of pop to deliver a radiant listening experience.
