Final Coil

I’m slightly embarrassed that I don’t know much about this band, but it does make me an objective reviewer. Although only four songs long, it does take me back to the 90’s music scene, which I largely tried to forget about, besides a few notable names. I can hear those notable names on the album, and it’s a sentimental and nostalgic way to pay tribute. There is also a lot of energy flowing from their music.

For FINAL COIL, going back means looking back to a musical era which ignited the creative spirit in their youthful selves; a time when ALICE IN CHAINS were riding high in the Billboard charts with "Jar of Flies," when NINE INCH NAILS had just unveiled the harrowing "Downward Spiral," NIRVANA played their final gig, PINK FLOYD embarked on their last world tour and MACHINE HEAD roared into life changing the metal scene forever with their "Burn Your Eyes" debut. 1994. "1994" is fun, but it's not playing around. Even in this unshackled, raucous form FINAL COIL's sheer class shines through – there's no hiding song writing skills and musical dexterity of these levels. Upon its release, "1994" is destined to become a watershed moment in FINAL COIL's unfolding career.

The album has four songs, and "Instant Fix" is first. It definitely has that feeling of early 90's music, more specifically grunge/punk, and even more specifically JANE's ADDICTION. It's fast, has a crunchy riff, and is quite catchy. I think it's Phil's vocals that reflect the aforementioned band. "Narcissist" hears that same riff from the previous sound come around once again. The vocals are harmonized, and it's just a bit on the darker side. "God, he hates me…can't erase me," he broods. "Playing Games" has a groove in the slower beat, and the vocals are delivered ala ALICE IN CHAINS. They are melancholy, and almost emotionless, which in a contextual way are full of feelings. That's one of the strange things about music like this.

"Woke" is the final song, and it combines the best of what Rock, Punk, and Alternative music have to offer the listener. It has a hard, driving beat, a catchy vocal performance, energetic drumming, and smooth riffing, although again it is just a bit on the dark side. I'm slightly embarrassed that I don't know much about this band, but it does make me an objective reviewer. Although only four songs long, it does take me back to the 90's music scene, which I largely tried to forget about, besides a few notable names.
