Crypts of Eternity
Fäust

"Crypts of Eternity" is the second full-length album from the French Black Metallers FÄUST. This album is a real turning point in the band's discography. After the EP "At the Dawn of Life Demise" and the demo compilation "Night Terror Tapes." FÄUST is finally going further on its dark path and delivers seven new intense and insidious tracks. The album was recorded and mixed by Michaël Hellström at Soulreaper Studio, and mastered by Ronnie Bjornström at Bjornström Sound Studio. The hellish, apocalyptic artwork was created by Gragoth. Beware the funeral winds and prepare for an epic dark journey into the shadows of the underworld.
The album has seven songs, and "In Tenebris" is first; a short instrumental mood setter. The deep bell strikes tell me we are in for a dark ride, as does the tense atmosphere building. "To the Fire, to the Death" answers with a thick song full of aggression and vocal screams. The riffs are fairly steady however, and not that overgrown wall that you often hear in the genre. Still, it has plenty of energy and punch. "Night Terror" is indeed a terrifying affair. Frightening elements are infused into the dark sound, and the each note of the vocals sound like razor blades on your skin. The guitar leads are excellent as well, and some of the melodies they build move the album more towards Melodic Black Metal.
"Crypts of Eternity" has more declarative tones from the marching riff. For me, it sounds like an army of the dead is being assembled to march on earth against all mankind. The army moves slowly, as any massive beast would, making sure no one is left alive. "In a Ghastly Silence" sound like a song that has been doused in gasoline…light the fuse, run away, and watch the fire rage. It has a fast moving sound and plenty of energy, fueled by the speed of the drums and precise riffing. "Sorcery" is an aptly titled song, because the mysterious atmosphere and clean vocals hint at something evil afoot. From there, dual guitar harmonies augment the deeply harrowing sound.
"And then Blows the Funeral Winds" is the final song, and it's another ball of raging energy. It slows around the halfway mark, and makes room for somber leads that sing, and cry out with anguish. Considering that this entire album was composed and performed by a single musician, it gives the listener some gravity to consider. The songs were well composed, and the aggression was held in check at times in order to let somber melodies enter. This was a solid release.
