EXTREME COLD WINTER was started in 2009 by A.J. van Drenth, joined by Seth Van de Loo and as a vocalist extraordinaire they were joined by Pim Blankenstein. "World Exit" is everything one expects to hear from a band like EXTREME COLD WINTER. Each of the songs on this record is chilling, heavy, and menacing. "World Exit" defines the true essence of gloomy and dismal extreme metal music, for it is a very heavy sounding slab of Old School Death/Doom Metal music, which all aficionados of Heavy harmonies will like. The album contains seven tracks.

"Animals in Wintertime" leads off the album. A slow, Doomy riff leads off the song, complete with block strikes in the drums. The guitars work into a harmony of riffs, while the vocals are bleak and harsh. "Time Space World" is a bit longer. It opens with a lumbering, crushing riff and Death vocals. The riffing could be a little more creative. The background ambiance is nice...it's sets a little mood here. Towards the end it becomes more prominent. "Permafrost Entombment" is a little shorter, but so far, the album contains three very similar tracks. They need to work in some variation here or the album will fall flat.

"The Sea Taketh" opens with familiar sounds of the shore. From there, it lumbers forward again with familiar riffs. That background ambiance however is wonderful...if they could find a way to work it into the music more, they might really be onto something. "Pharmakia" begins with piano notes, but soon falls back into a similar sound as the other tracks on the album. It picks up a bit after the half-way mark, with a faster picked riff, but also one that is not very original. "Serpent's Seduction" is more of the same. The sound is dragged out as long as it possibly can be, but there just isn't much to stretch. The band seems stuck on one central theme when it comes to the music.

"Cursed Like Cain" closes the album. It features more of the slow, heavy strikes of previous tracks but again, it's more of the same. Overall, the album is indeed "chilling, heavy, and menacing," but also fairly one-dimensional in scope. Huge, lumbering, cold riffs pepper the landscape, but without much variation, the band relies mostly on these riffs and the devastating nature of the vocals. These components are not quite enough to propel the album out of the realm of the thousands of bands also trying to replicate this same sound. It has potential, but they need to push themselves into territory uncharted in the Doom Metal genre...it's out there, they just need to embrace it.
