Three-man group EULOGY (2017) are from Caerdydd, Cymru (Cardiff, Wales) my lovely ancestral home. You see, a long, long time ago there was this "thing" wot happened with certain parties from England and me family got put on a boat, ending up on a colonial island in the Carib. It's all good and, as Mark Twain said, "Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it." The lads in EULOGY are doing big hair metal without the big hair and less metal and crikey, I hear a down-tuned and raw STRYPER. I don't see that they are Christian rockers as they do not have any of those trappings on their promo material. The band describes themselves as "a melodic/ classic hard rock band ... that plays original hard rock music with a dark, lyrical twist." Ya mon. I also detect some New Testament vibe from their lyrics ... am I wrong?
Goodbye my friends ... "Cross to Bear" has old school gut punch guitar tone and no obvious multi-tracking, just big guitar tracked to DAW then mixed with a squeeze of grunge. "You'll Die Alone" is a cracker sing-along and I find myself ... singing along. Lead vocalist Neil Thomas reminds me of Graham Bonnet with a bit of Klaus Meine, and I shit you not - Michael Sweet. He reminds me of Sweet's phrasing and melodicism, a STRYPER flavor also shared by the Mike Williams on guitar. Neil could fit in with any of the singers that did time with the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP. When the crows they come ... "Corvid" is the Youtube video single from this 4 song release. It gallops along at a proper clip, IRON MAIDEN style. Scream and shout ... I'm gonna tell you what it's all about ... "Blood Red Skies" rounds out the release with a mid-tempo bangers and mash rocker.
"Memento Mori" by EULOGY is a short disc at 4 songs. I like the catchy song arrangements. The lyrics can be a bit vanilla in places, trappings of the genre. There is melody at work and a fine vocal performance. If you are down with 80's-90's rock-metal you owe it to yourself to check the lads out. They are playing all over Gales and old Blighty when these current COVID-19 troubles pass. Crack on EULOGY ! Stay safe everyone and be good to yourselves.
