Lord of Nightmare

Endless Dismal Moan

It played (and prayed) on the listener’s fears by bringing them to life in front of your eyes, leaving little to the imagination. It’s a black hole…a blood stained room that you can only see with a blacklight…and a face so ugly, it could turn you to stone.

From Bandcamp, “ENDLESS DISMAL MOAN is the brainchild of Japanese musician Chaos 9. Embracing the digital production and aesthetics of his era as well as incorporating the suffocating sensation of Japanese horror. ENDLESS DISMAL MOAN provides a completely twisted take on the very idea of raw black metal that remains unsurpassed to this very day.” The album has six songs, and “Thirst for Pleasure” is first. Haunting piano notes lead off the song, followed by a veritable explosion of Black Metal madness, with screams that could turn the dead into walking corpses once again. The music is thick, overgrown, and intense. The piano notes make a return towards the end, in a reprisal of sorts.

“I.S.L.N.W.D.” is another intense song that gains some lift from the tortured sound of the vocals. The music is very dissonant, and it mimics the feeling of being captive in a nightmare. The pattern continues to the point where it becomes almost hypnotizing. “Griefs” breaks the blood-brain barrier with a barrage of assaults on your senses, the most frightening is the harrowing quality of the song. It has just the right amount of backing elements to make you feel like you are living in the ruins of Chernobyl. “Thirst” has nefarious and evil sounds that build slowly, creating a tension that is so thick, you would need to cut it with a knife. What follows is pure evil incarnate.

The title track begins with more creepy piano notes and quickly ducks down into the hole that leads to Hell itself, where the fires burn at impossible temperatures. The harrowing elements are so frightening, you can feel them in your bones. “ENDLESS DISMAL MOAN [9 to Death]” closes the album, and it’s a 10-minute opus. Creepy tones open the song, with distorted, dissonant guitars and feedback. And that’s where it stays. It may seem like mindless dissonance to you, but I understand it. This was an excellent album. It played (and prayed) on the listener’s fears by bringing them to life in front of your eyes, leaving little to the imagination. It’s a black hole…a blood stained room that you can only see with a blacklight…and a face so ugly, it could turn you to stone.
