Elderwind - Fires album cover

From Bandcamp, "Fire and death, loss and grief are closely intertwined. Being in the shackles of the Ural forests and mountains, in captivity of the Volga River, we tried to convey these feelings and emotions when your native place is engulfed in fires." The band is from Russia, and their newest album here has six songs.

"The Last Days" is the first. The opening atmosphere is beautifully sad, with rain falling among soft, melodic keyboard notes. From there, a rich Black Metal sound ensues, but the melody line remains strong. "The Relict" is a more traditional Black metal song, with a strong wall of guitars, blast beat drums, and harrowing vocals. The melodies are a bit more subtle here, a bit pushed into the background, but they fight the aggressiveness with everything they have. "Call of the Urals" begins with dripping water, and a restless subject, combined with more charming keyboards. Again, the vocals are aggressive but the melody is dialed up a bit, and pokes its head through the heaviness with a regal curiosity.

"Fires" has a slower, more thoughtful and poignant sound. The rhythm guitars build steady, pretty melodies among the raging vocals. One of the things I like most about this album is that you really can't tell if the music is sad or angry...both elements are equally strong. "In Flames of Pain" pushes more melody into the forefront, and the lead guitar breaks through the thick skies with shining light. This song is pure sadness and pain...you can feel the earth lament with the burning sting of the fires. "Rebirth" is where the tide turns in the tale. The scorched remains of the fires are black and dead, but given enough time, green will grow again. This is nature's cleanser.

Overall, this was a fantastic album. You can feel the connection from the themes to the titles of the songs and the music. The quartet was able to relay feelings of dread, pain, sorrow, frustration, and other emotions, and also found a nice balance between the sweet melodies and the stark aggression of Black Metal.
