Halls of Salvation
Eclesios
From their EPK, "The heavens are aflame and the flock prays for salvation. But salvation never comes. Of course not. What they deem sacred is a temple, made from bones, flesh, skin, and blood, a church praying for their already redeemed souls. It's the temple of ECLESIOS. A bunch of Thuringian renegade worshippers, formed under the very same name, pushes the gates to the crypt wide open. On their debut record, released in conspiracy with Eisenwald, they unearth the rotten corpses of early 90's death metal in their own obscure way." The album contains five songs.
The title track is the first. What sounds like a routine church ritual opens the album...but it is anything but routine. A heavy and slow riff drops, and fire comes up from the floor, burning the congregation alive. Although this was billed as Black Metal, it sounds much closer to Death Metal, but with a simpler approach...no pig squeals, guttural vocals or general complete lack of melody. The bottom end is pretty heavy and chunky though, like someone peeled most of the meat off of your bones. The title track begins with warning bells, followed by another low and simple riff. The guitar solo sinks the song pretty far because it is choppy, sloppy, and doesn't follow a melody line. The slow grind after the half-way mark is fairly effective, however.
"N.O.S" features a fairly straightforward blueprint for Death Metal...a low, rumbling riff and some spastic leads. The vocals are back to where they were before...part shouts, part screams...but the music is pretty bad. The pace quickens close to the half-way mark, into near chaotic offerings but the slow grind continues after. "Death Chiming" is a bit shorter. It's another overly simple riff however, and the album is plagued with them. "Nuclear Vulva" closes the album. It has another slow, grinding riff again with very little energy or creativity. What started as promising spiraled into mediocrity by the end.
Poor production and poor musicianship is a recipe for disaster on the album. They definitely harken back to the early days of the genre, but I am not sure this is by design. It would seem that this style is all they can really play, and I hate to say it that way. It's brutal, but there is very little to champion here, and I think you can safely skip this.
