Dismal Spells Part II: The Night Circus
Druadan Forest
Formed in 1998 in Finland, the Dungeon Synth/Black Metal band band takes their name from a mythical forest, also known as the Tawar-in-Drúedain, was a pine forest of Gondor, located in Anórien, which was North of Minas Tirith, in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. This is the band’s fifth album, and it has eight songs. “Moonlight Sorcery” is first. It has that slow rhythmic quality of Dungeon Synth, as well as the soft bells in the music. “Witches Lake” has a little more in the melody department, and the ride is very straight and flat.
“Summer Night Orgies” sounds like an interesting title for a song. The orgies must be fairly quiet however to match the sonority of the sound. The synths are again smooth and easy on the ears. “The Devil’s Gate” is a short instrumental with a heavy hand on the church organ, setting forth ominous elements. “Spells and Magic Potions” is mostly a series of bell runs up and down a scale, but the backing elements do their job also. “Raven and Daggar” is another smooth ride, but this time there are a few bumps along the way, as a backing hum provides a harrowing sound.
“Wizard’s Hut” has a bit of an animated swing to it, and soft recorder notes provide much of the subdued melodies. I picture a wizard just sitting inside his house, studying books for months. “Black Towers of Kharanos” closes the album. It has sad and melancholy tones, which are common throughout the album. A basic three chord melody carries the sound. Overall, this was a smooth and easy album on the ears. Dungeon Synth is not supposed to be overly exciting, but the composer does make the album interesting at least. This is something you could put on while you lose yourself in thought.
