Midnight Implosion
Dressed to Kill
DRESSED TO KILL, play old school Heavy/Speed Metal with an almost '80s sound. Think early IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST etc. with a bit of LA sleaze thrown in for good measure. Think N.W.O.B.H.M with a very early MOTLEY CREW sound. An interesting sound for a 5-piece band from Beijing China. Formed in 2013 DRESSED TO KILL have an E.P. named "A Night In Trance," released in 2017. "Midnight Implosion" is their first full album
After the obligatory intro "Midnight Comes Around" sets the tone. Bass nicely to the forefront, with the singers sneering vocals, and at times on this track, and others, stretched to its limit, but never beyond, adding to the raw edged sound of the record overall. Throw in some twin guitar action, and you have the template sound for the rest of the tunes.
"Rose Of Kowloon" the only song which even hints at where this band come from geographically, but not sonically, we are still firmly in the '80s. "Welcome To My Carnival" is a sleazy beast of a track, which chugs along. Again, great twin guitar work. Its circus music intro and maniacal laughter on the run in and run out of the track is a great touch, one of the best tracks on the album for me.
"Breakin' Through The Sky", "Rock On The Way Of Dreams" and "A Blade In The Night" stick to the formula, perhaps a little bit too much. The songs tend to plow a very similar furrow, which doesn't promote repeated listening of the album as a whole. After a few listens I find myself skipping to my favorite tracks. All good tunes, but a bit more variation would have elevated the listening experience.
Which brings us to "Murder City". It isn't too dissimilar to the others, but it has enough of a Speed Metal feel to it to feel different. Helped by the dueling guitar solos, and breakneck pace, it is a short , sweet song. "Queen Of The Light" is a fine track. The guitar intro sets the tone to the song. The song works as a perfect blend of Metal and Sleaze. It sounds both dirty and crisp at the same time, and is up there with the best on the album.
Last track "Speed Metal Mania", is the sort of, almost, throw away last track, you would find on many period Euro Speed Metal bands albums. It does what it says on the tin. It has PRIEST, MAIDEN, ACCEPT, and UFO. As a collection of songs, generally I enjoyed them, but for repeated listening I would have liked a bit more variety. In the middle 3rd would give the collection of songs a bit more longevity, but overall a fun throw-back to when this reviewer started to listen to Rock and Metal.
