Dreadlink - Zero One album cover

I am sad. Not for any genitalia-related reasons - I've accepted that it won't ever get any longer. Nay, I am sad that DREADLINK have so much potential, it seems, but it just doesn't add up to anything of real greatness. Like a lot of things I myself do.

This album, "Zero One", really has me in a confused state. I'm not sure what score to give it. It seems to blend parts of Thrash and Death Metal together, but it sounds like the idea bowl ran dry or sprung a leak somewhere. Many of the songs have some really impressive riffs or leads, but it often is sandwiched between several tracks of pure monotony. Specifically, give the sixth and last song a go. Notice the well-done clean melodies. Why wasn't there more of that? Maybe not necessarily just clean melodies or harmonies or fills, but some kind of musical motif or idea that breaks the pattern up. Variety is the spice of life, gentlemen.

And that is why I am sad. Worse, the vocalist sounds like he is really straining to squeeze off a turd or a fart or something, his style could use some inspiration. Listen to old MASTER or MORBID ANGEL, or maybe even CORONER, I really think that vocal style would fit perfectly here. Anything besides what he is doing, it does not work, in my opinion.

So that's it. All I can say passed this is that I recommend the band try to write a decent instrumental. I think that's the true test of any good band. If you can't write something that isn't being pulled along entirely by lyrics, then you don't deserve a passing grade.

But that's just my opinion. Feel free to tell me I'm an asshole.
