Book of Black
Draken
Psych Rock trio DRAKEN release their sophomore album, here, which contains eight songs. "The Book of Black" is the first song. The music is fairy tense and moves with an energy, while the earnest harsh vocals fit the sound perfectly. The riffs aren't overly complicated, but they work. "Bastards" moves with the groove of a MOTORHEAD sound, fast and full of spite. The vocals have a snarl to them and are somewhere between clean and harsh. The (trumpets?) at the end help to round out the sound.
"We Deserve to Suffer" fades in with a mid-tempo groove and some staccato rhythms. One thing that the band is good at is drawing you into this sound, and you can't help but tap your foot/sway your head to the beat. "House of Horrors" has a slightly more depressing sound, from a smooth and easy riff, and lamenting vocals. The keyboards assist in thickening out this stewy sound of desperation combined with rage. "Symbiote" strolls with a SABBATH sound and a groove that gets stuck in your head. The dialed back vocals and thumping bass before the chorus are a nice, unexpected touch.
"Devotees of the Faith" features another easy listening riff and some catchy notes in the vocals. There is also a good trade-off between major and minor notes along the way, keeping the listener guessing what is coming next. "Relentless Sinners" is an undenying groove of aggressive, heavy riffs and some really nice bass work. This might be the best song on the album. "Bloodguilt" closes the album, with crunchy and weighted riffs. Much of the sound drops in the verses, only to return with a heavy snarl in the chorus. The rest of the song is a dark, and swampy experience, and ends the album on a depressive note.
Overall, I enjoyed the album. Although the sound was nothing new pe se, the trio fused a lot of their own energy and personality into the music. I would also be hard pressed to find a Heavy Rock/Metal fan who doesn't like MOTORHEAD or SABBATH, and those are probably the band's major influences. The album has a nice balance between energetic tracks with tracks of more desperation and depressive sounds, and the vocalist presents a couple different styles as well. This was a solid album to listen to.
