III: Over The Under

The old dog has to learn a new trick and more or the next trick will be on him. These lyrics could describe the new DOWN album in the best way possible. The 'dog' has gathered experience from the - not so many - years in the scene and has decided to play a more than nice trick on us. The name of this trick... III - Over The Under. The result could not be anything else than amazing, especially when you bare in mind the heavy weight names that form this engine we call DOWN.
Having already released two incredible albums that have made them gain recognition and success, the US metallers are mostly known for their past and their present. The band's members have been a part of bands like the great PANTERA, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY and CROWBAR. I don't want to hide that DOWN is one of my favorite bands and I was really glad to be the one to review its brand new masterpiece.
Since DOWN need no more introductive words, I can begin by saying that III - Over The Under is one of the band's most complete works. Anselmo and his gang are back to deliver a great album full of dark, heavy melodies that are backed up by the incredible rhythm section that Brown and Windstein have 'created'. The whole atmosphere is not so Southern Rock & Roll as in their previous works, but it is more kind of a heavier Metal attitude with tons of whiskey flowing out of the speakers. If the band's first two albums were what would make you enjoy a glass of whiskey, III - Over The Under will make you wanna drink the whole bottle. A song that kicked my sorry ass from the very first time was On March The Saints, the one the band picked to become its first video clip from this album. This song is groovy as hell, with Anselmo singing in a not so harsh style with more melodic vocals and the band kicking ass with the incredibly clever music.
That's what makes this album differ from the previous ones. The band is based mostly on its smartness and only on plain heavy and groovy compositions. There is not a way that I can describe you exactly III - Over The Under. This is an album you have to listen to and make your own decision about its quality. As for me, I think it is obvious that I loved it.
