A suggestive band name DOOMOCRACY, a very DOOM album cover, what we expected from here is a pure Doom Metal right? Not exactly, "Unorthodox", the third and new album of the Greece quintet formed in 2011 in Crete shows up that the band intent to be far more for that adding lots of other influences in their work, which was recorded at Devasoundz Studios in Athens, Greece with additional recordings at Groove Studio in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The album is mixed & mastered by Simon Johansson and Mike Wead at SolnaSound Studio in Stockholm, Sweden.
"Aeons Of Winter" is a half-minute intro with airs of suspense that paves the way for entrance to "Eternally Lost" where of course the doom atmosphere is present, but soon we start to listen, we notice how the presence of Progressive Metal is strong, another thing we also notice here is the wide reach of the voice of Michael Stavrakakis. "Prelude To The Apocalypse" keep up the good pace, and has a very interesting synergy between lead and base guitars, the transitions between chorus and stanzas sounded awesome to me. "The Hidden Gospel" is another intro, which works narratively for "Novum Dogma" carried Symphony X memories thru me, and well, I love this band, the heavy riffs, the tempo changes, the little pauses at some moments, this track really took me back in time to revive a great moment. "Catharsis" the longest track in the album shows everything the band can produce, bringing more Epic vibes, traveling between high and low and provoking an excellent result.
"Death: A State Of Mind" is a short song, and probably the one that carries the most doom essence in your soul, suffering can be felt miles away. "October 14th 1582", according to the story, Pope Gregory VIII adopted the measure to cancel the days between 5 and 14 October, from the year 1582, to organize the Julian calendar. You can find out more of the band intent and vision about this song and album concept reading their interview at Metal Temple.
