Dodskold - Ödesriket album cover

Dodskold is  a Swedish black metal band who formed in 2020. "Ödesriket" is their full length debut album. While the production is decent for this style, the overall sound of the album is raw, with more than enough bite to the instruments. As a result, the album sounds powerful and full without a homemade basement sound. "Odesriket" is rooted in that early 90s black metal sound, complete  with frostbite infected grim attitude. However it has a depressive atmosphere, especially when the song's slow down. The tempo is really the key to the album.  Alternating between fast, mid and slow tempos keeps everything flowing and also keeps monotony at bay. The songs are still riff based though, with the lead guitar providing subtle changes.. The bass and drums are strong, forming a solid foundation with a full sound.

"Sista Ridten," opens with a fast paced blackened riff and throaty vocals. A slight groove pushes the song forward.  This particular part sounds evil and cult, especially when the grimy vocals come in.  The drums crashing around the song in a very exciting way while still being part of a tight rhythm section. The problem with the song is one that plagues much of the album: eventually, the music just kind drones away without much variation at times. The vocals are acidic blackened screams and growls-they ride along with the groove for a very fluid opening track. Around the 1:30 mark the song slows down, the riffs opening up while the drums accent everything with powerful snare and symbol work.

"Misärens Triumf," is one of the album's highlights. The slow, static buildup leads the song into a mid paced journey where the bass and vocals especially shine.  About halfway, clean vocals are introduced to add another take at their sound and a successful one at that. The clean gutiar intro of "Ty Döden Är Lifvets Lön," shows the band isn't always about searing black metal and the clean vocals mixed over over grim ones worked well. The final track "Ödeskväde Till Riddersmark" is an epic finisher. The song's beginning is ambient style as multi styled/layered vocals sing over the accompanying clean guitar.

If the album contained more songs like the aforementioned two, I could definitely see it getting a higher score and a bit more enjoyment out of it for myself. This part is catchy and somewhat reminds me of vocals based chant songs like sea shanties. The tone turns menacing with the low rumble of vocals running thru the distortion. The song doesn't change much but it's depth is subtle and it sounds like one huge moving piece. All in all, "Ödesriket" is a solid black metal album and debut. It has definitely whetted my appetite for what the band can do in the future.
