Djevelkult - Drep Alle Guder album cover

DJEVELKULT is a Black Metal band formed in Norway in 2010. Founded as SKADEFRYD, they changed their moniker before the release of their first album. "Drep Alle Guder" is their third release, and contains eight tracks. The title track leads off the album. It rolls right into a thick Black Metal sound with harsh vocals and rhythm guitars that move to and fro. The production is a bit muted and there are some minor phasing issues however. The guitar solo is quite well done...something that doesn't often occur in the genre.

"Deadbringer" begins with some nifty drum fills and a mean and aggressive approach. The chaos drops a bit around the half-way mark, to a slow grind. But those horrid vocals never let up. "Den Forhatte" opens with staccato guitars that give way to another slow grind of heavy rhythms and harrowing vocals. "I Kuldens Vold" begins with solemn clean guitars along with some melancholy tones. You can hear the bass notes clearly. Then, it transitions to heavier sounds complete with more scary, screaming vocals. The guitars and bass climb in an odd sounding riff.

"The Life Destroyer" opens with a chaotic blend of aggressive guitars, bass and drums, together with more screams from the vocals. The sound takes a couple turns along the way with pacing changes. "Voidwalker" brings more of the same to the table. The slowed down section allows the harrowing tones to dig in and take hold. The sound picks up into more chaotic passages before it ends. "Fordommelse" begins with slower, solemn tones. Depression is starting to sink in. The pace picks up a little along the way but the despondent tones continue. Towards the end, clean vocals kick in a keep you down.

"Perfect Obliterate" closes the album. Unfortunately, it's more of the same sound again. In a nutshell, this is a FWOBM influenced sound with very little variation from "the rules." What I am referring to here is the unwritten rule that Black Metal, in order to be "real," must adhere to long established standards of burning churches, corpse paint, and other features that keep it classified as "true kvlt" Metal. What this doesn't leave room for is any experimentation, or any chance to blaze your own path. Rehash the sounds of the 1990s again and again, for this is the only way to make Black Metal.
