Diamond Dogs - Recall Rock and Roll and the Magic Soul album cover

I spent my formative years in an area of northern Canada that had no television reception, no radio, and a public library with a collection smaller than my mom's personal book collection. One-day recess was canceled due to a wolf (really) running through the school yard. While sequestered in the gym, I was exposed to bands like SWEET, NAZARETH, SLADE, and a man who was an oddity. (guess who) DIAMOND DOGS are obviously influenced by this group, and their new release "Recall Rock and Roll and the Magic Soul" is trying to do just as the title states.

From the glam feeling "Recall Rock n' Roll" opener they set off on a journey that goes through the bluesy beginnings with songs like "There is a Fire Down There" and "Somebody Have Mercy" to the rocking "Good Times". They successfully capture the many styles of rock that lead up to the glam explosion in the mid 70's with their skills on their chosen instruments.

Sören Sulo Karlsson has the voice that is the perfect narrator for this ride, almost chameleon in character as it morphs to suit whatever style is required. The keys of the Duke of Honk are precise, flowing and again are well suited for whatever is being played, from a honky tonk to a 70's Glam pop tune. The walk around bass style of Morgan Korsmoe is perfectly metered by the beat of Johannes Nordell. Floating on top is the eclectic and diverse guitar parts played by Lars Karlsson, never stealing the spotlight but always impressing with his abilities.

There is a big problem though that is glaring. The quality of the recording is horrendous, sounding like it was recorded from an A.M. radio. This is inexcusable in this day and age, especially with a group as experienced as them. If they were trying to give the feel of the era, they captured the wrong part.

I don't know if I can recommend this CD, the music is amazing, but it's hard to overcome the quality of the recording. If you can though, it's well worth it.Production  6
