From their EPK, "Born in 2016 in the sewers of Brno, Czech Republic, DEPTHS ABOVE is one of the underground's best kept secret. We reached out to the band, and they described the album as an attempt to deal "with creation and destruction, with a very existentialist vibe, questioning the very nature of existence itself and investigating the possibilities of outer worlds and other dimensions". The album has four songs.

"Here and Everywhere" is the first. The opening tones are tense, leading to a dissonant, heavy, and low display of guitars, bass, and drums. The vocals are horrid. To me, it sounds like a bit of a combination of Black Metal, Death Metal, and Sludge Metal. Depressive tones bubble and ooze, spreading their filth everywhere. "The Descent" begins with thick and meaty bass guitar tones, rolling drums, and some spoken words. The playing field is leveled a bit with a lumbering riff. There are some subtle Progressive elements in the music as well, mostly from the structure of the sound and time changes. Talk about a descent...the ending sequence will grab you by the collar and drag you into the underworld.

"A Prayer" features some clean guitar work. How they get it to sound so depressive is beyond me. As it rolls forward, it picks up in these qualities. The main riff is crushing...to your very soul. There are no vocals in the song...only a hole where your heart should be. The lengthy title track closes the album. The structure of the song is varied and keeps the listener engaged. At times, rays of light get through the dark grey clouds but are promptly swallowed again by the mass of grey. The clean vocals are just as depressing as the harsh ones. As the song nears closing, you can feel any sense of calm or morale going out the window.

A best kept secret, indeed. DEPTHS ABOVE have created a landscape of grey skies, falling rain, driving snow, and so cold and sterile that you soon forget about your daily comforts and any things that gave you happiness. Instead, they drag you into a bog where no light gets in, there is no food, no shelter from the elements, and no absolution for your soul. Enter the album at your own risk...it may prove too overbearing for the weak at heart.
